Best Bond Ever?

Daniel Craig reprises his role as 007
Bond is back again after four long years and many are singing his praise with some even believing Skyfall to be the best Bond ever. Well I agree that it’s great to see Daniel Craig return as James Bond, I must respectful disagree with this grand statement. Though it is evident that the team behind Bond has put a lot of effort into this reimagining, this character by no means matches the Bond of the early 1960s. As a sign of times, Bond has been redeveloped from the mysterious, macho and frankly two-dimensional character to a more grounded character struggling with the difficulties of age to better fit the population. This however goes completely against what James Bond stands for as an everlasting icon of the suave and sophisticated Brit.

Javier Bardem steps up as the new Bond villain
Don’t get me wrong I liked Skyfall, it just didn’t seem to fit as a Bond film. The attempt to reshape the character seemed alien to the franchise.
As for the general plot, it was alright if not a bit generic. Javier Bardem played the role of the villain; an ex-agent for MI6 bent on revenge, whose plot was to reveal the records of undercover agents. He played the role alright, but not well enough to really stand out. M played by Judi Dench has a heavy role in this installation yet her segments were often unmemorable.

The modern Bond; sleek and stylish
But what really makes Skyfall shine is its sleek and cool aesthetics perfectly embodied by Daniel Craig as James Bond. The action sequences continue to be exciting and well-choreographed. Furthermore, the visuals in the movie are stunning with certain shots causing your jaw to drop. Well some of the plot leaves something to be desired the film does what it must; shows an attractive movie that’s enjoyable to watch. Is it the best Bond? No, but it’s a step up from most and this film will dazzle and excite. Just be glad that they worked out the kinks and you’re not stuck watching Quantum of Solace.

  1. I think you're view is really interesting. I only saw like, five minutes of the movie while my dad was watching it, so I can't really agree or disagree with you. I also haven't seen any other Bond films, but I can understand your opinion of the Bond-struggling-with-age thing. That definitely goes against my mental view of Bond, but it's true that the target audience is aging as well. It's sad that films have to disrupt a great series with an attempt to get better feedback.

  2. My dad often watched the old James Bond with Sean Connery when I was growing up but I haven’t really seen the new ones so I cannot agree or disagree. I think it is sad that they had to change Bond to appeal to younger audiences. Personally I think it is greatly upsetting that few people can appreciate and love classic films, shows and characters, like Bond. Do you think that if they worked on story more, too few movies have good or great stories anymore, but if they had done more work on the story could they have made Skyfall a better Bond movie?

    1. I don't think the problem with Skyfall is its story. As a story the movie fits well within the realm of Bond however since the movie still has to fit within the franchise, the movie is limited in what it can do storytellingwise. Because of these constraints Skyfall (let alone any other Bond films) can never be as good in story, as a stand alone film could be, so instead they have to play up James Bond as a seris. Since Skyfall shys away from this it becomes more of a stand alone film which doesn't suit it. Skyfall is an alright movie, but it isn't a Bond which is generally what is expected upmost.

  3. I'm gonna agree with Renee on this one, James Bond struggling with age? Seems odd for such a closed off, macho character. I haven't seen really any of the new James Bond moveis. I saw one a really long time ago, but that is all my knowledge on the guy. Who is you favorite James Bond?

  4. Of all the Bonds I would have to say my favorite was Sean Connery with my favorite Bond being Goldfinger. However, I still have a soft spot for Pierce Brosnan just because of the time I grew up.
